Uregnogba was where my life began.
Though i am in a distant land, two seas
away, maybe i will return to be buried
there amidst my ancestors, perhaps revered.

Actually, my name be Ehimamiegho,
and it means say i go always be protected
from evil ones, like you.
And i am also a queen.
My father was Okaegbe - I inherited the
power... and the responsibility.
it was my destiny
Like so many Oyingbo, Miller thought all
of us natives were lazy
and thieves, not to be trusted. Such a clever
man, who did not see
the irony in asking me to watch 'the lazy,
thieving natives.'
Finally, as Adesuwa was unveiled. Lamin and
his family whooped and clapped
enthusiastically, shouting out, 'Yes, yes, this
is the flower we want
to pick from your beautiful garden.'
She was born in Edo State in Nigeria. She left at a young age but not before being the recipient of her grandmother’s traditional oral story telling. This tradition followed her to the UK where her children and grand children became the beneficiaries of many oral stories she created to connect them to their heritage. Encouraged by family she began to write down some of these stories but never saw herself as a writer. She is currently working on a sequel novella to this book.
Highlife—is alive and well in Edo State, 300 kilometers east of Lagos, and the center of the former Benin Empire. Edo highlife musicians fill the role of traditional musicians by animating community ceremonies such as weddings and funerals, and praising prominent members of the community.
